Why can't they score 500 runs in the 4th innings?

England and New Zealand are playing quite a competitive test series at the moment. It all ends tomorrow. England have to score over 500 in the last innings and they've already lost 5 wickets and scored 200-odd. Not a chance in hell. Worse still, no team in the world -- including the Almighty Aussies -- manage to score big in inning #4. Why is it so hard even in the age of Adam Gilchrist and Virendra Sehwag?
