From Godhra to Vadodara: Delhi sees a pattern

Akila quotes a Dainik Jagaran report which says that the Central government saw a very similar pattern between the riots in Godhra and Vadodara. They were both started about a year before the State Assembly elections in Gujarat. The Vadodara riots were allowed to continue in the hopes that they would spread to other cities. The Central government sent the Rapid Reaction Force and the Army in to quell the riots speedily, preventing the situation from getting totally out of control.

Beethoven

I'm listening to this history of Classical Music and the experts just can't stop raving about Beethoven. All the Beethoven clips they play are fantastic, but is he the only one? Is he uniquely unique?

Ads on Firefox

This worked: Adblock Plus and Adblock Filterset.G Updater. Install Adblock Plus first, restart Firefox, install Filterset.G Updater and restart.

Adblock by itself is not that useful.

Filterset.G is a smart tool. It keeps track of all the latest culprits and keeps the Adblock filters updated.

Anti-Scientology banners fly over MI3

(Via BoingBoing) Some guys are flying a plane with anti-Scientology banner at the opening of MI3. Hilarious! Folks first spend money on Scientology (Did you know they have a major Dianetics/Scientology store in downtown Mtn View now? Crazy!) and then they spend money on ridiculous protests...

Web ads getting out of control - again

It was going to be a matter of time, but now they are back and they are worse. NYTimes, Cricinfo, ToI and most other websites now are throwing pop-under ads that work for Firefox also. Smashits is going a step further. It is throwing ads up so that they show up as new tabs in Firefox - now that's a first!

I installed the adblock plugin but I couldn't be bothered to configure it and it seemed to screw up my Firefox, though that's most likely not the case.

Maybe I should try out IE7!

Bursting of the housing bubble

Fortune is running a story that may have been written a couple of years ago (in anticipation) and is running a bit earlier than it should (in anticipation). Can't dispute the conclusions though.

New York Times says Gujarat synonymous with communal violence

The communal violence with which Mr. Modi's state has become virtually synonymous erupted once more on Monday, when the demolition of a Muslim shrine in Vadodara ignited street violence, killing six people.

Plagiarism vs Mashups

Gaurav sent this link to an article describing similarities between passages in Kaavya Viswanathan's book and Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories and a number of other books.

Everyone says that the plots of those books are different from Kaavya's, but the passages are similar/identical.

So then, isn't it a mashup in a musical sense? As long as it's a different story, who cares if it is made up of bits and pieces of others' stories?

Packaging of Kaavya Viswanathan

Kaavya Viswanathan does not, after all, quite seem to be a super-prodigy from articles like this one. I think it would be fun to shape and spin out startups the way these guys 'create' authors.
