John Roberts: ideologue

Dahlia Lithwick has produced an excellent series on the Senate confirmation hearings for John Roberts. She concludes that while John Roberts seems to insist on the constitution as the fountain of all wisdom, civil rights wouldn't have been possible with that sort of an attitude. She's down on Roberts. She writes:
"The problem isn't whether John Roberts can be principled and fair on a thoroughly passive court. I'm sold on that. It's whether a thoroughly passive court can ever truly be principled and fair."

Ferris Wheel

We thought we were suckered by the $5 Ferris Wheel ride at the Navy Pier in Chicago. It went slowly, very slowly and was over after just one loop. But I guess Ferris Wheels these days are "viewing platforms," and not really meant to be fun.

Zadie Smith's new novel

High praise for Zadie Smith's new novel "On Beauty." Tarun did have a copy of White Teeth, but I didn't end up reading White Teeth for some reason. I hope to be able to read this book at least.

Dwiji and Sudha are amazing!

I hadn't checked Sudha's blog for the last few days. Now I see that they have been busy carrying supplies for the Hurricane-hit (View page on Internet Explorer). They're truly amazing people!
