Living on a dollar a day: lessons in fasting

This guy tried to survive on a dollar-a-day diet for a month and did quite well at it. He also lost 18 pounds along the way.

I think fasting is a great way to start and persevere with a weight-loss plan. It seems to me (from experience) that consciously reducing the diet significantly for a week or so gets the body accustomed to a lowered calorie intake and makes it easier to control the diet subsequently. If you find yourself going back to your 'old ways', just fast again for another week or so, and you'll be back on track.

Separately, in yesterday's New York Times, the story of obesity and malnutrition in India.
