What would India have been, had the British not invaded?
I often wonder what the fate of India would have been without a British invasion in the 17th century.
From the Afghanistan experience, it seems like we wouldn't be any better off even without the British. In Afghanistan, according to this story, you have the choice between the Westerners (with their messy ways) and the barbaric Taliban.

If its true for Afghanistan, doesn't necessarily mean that it would have been true for India too. May be India would have managed to be part of the industrial revolution that changed the west. That would have helped India *maintain* its economic dominance in world economy. Till early 1800s, India and China, dominated the world economy by contributing 80% of the world GDP.
